Today I thought I would share some YouTube videos we've watched or followed along to!
Robe Curls
I don't know about anyone else, but for me 2020 was the year of letting my hair grow and throwing out the makeup. I haven't worn mascara in 13 months !! If you know me, this is huge. I was crazy about mascara (and eye liner). Mascara was my super power!
In the 1990's I read a book of tips from an advice columnist, Heloise, who had a column in my mom's Good Housekeeping magazine back then. You know what advice she gave me in that book? She said if you wanted your mascara to be fuller, just wear it again the next day with another coat of mascara on top. You are probably thinking, "Say what?! Go to bed with your mascara on??" Yeah, well, I took that advice at age 16 and did that for more years than I'd like to admit. Now I'm happy to say I'm an adult who actually recognizes her own naked face and no longer feels less-than without the mascara on (and all the other makeup I wore a lot of as well). Instead of the makeup I give myself face masks and massages and I've realized that wheat is an acne culprit for me, so I ditch it for better skin.
With less emphasis on making up my face, my hair is a place that I can be creative and take a little time to create a different look. My hair grew from about a chin length bob at the end of January 2020 to the length it is now. I stumbled upon a tutorial for robe curls on Pinterest a week or so ago and was reminded of how awesome heatless curls can be. Overnight hairstyles seem to be the trick to waking up with effortless hair when you have mid-length to long hair. I have realized the greatness of scrunchies and piling a topknot on my head before bed! All the things I hadn't realized about longer hair before, I'm realizing now.
Kind of natural looking (ahem, a bit frizzy :o), I think! At the very least the curls add lots of volume to my fine hair, which is a plus in my book. P.S. Day 2 the curls are looser, but still in my hair.
Lila's heatless waves...her hair was barely damp when I gave her the robe curls, so she has big loose waves!
I love this tutorial from Milabu on YT. Lila and I have watched some of her other tutorials in the past and really enjoyed those as well!
Yoga on YT
In the month of January, Darren and I did a 30-day program from Yoga With Adriene. We didn't plan this in advance, but found ourselves returning to it each day. It was a beautiful gift to ourselves during the coldest month of winter, and I am grateful for the free yoga that Adriene offers on her YT channel.
Here's a great, short video I have also done from YWA. She has so many awesome short videos! If I am looking for a guided yoga practice, it's Adriene I turn to these days. Fun facts about Adriene are that she and I share the middle name Louise and she lives in Austin, Texas where I lived for five years and practiced lots of yoga :-)
Instrumental/Background music on YT
Sometime last fall I stumbled upon a couple of cool artists on You Tube making background music videos. Since then I have found many videos that I enjoy turning on while we play a board game or while crafting. Are you familiar with any of these?
Chillhop is a lofi fave of the Colorblind family!
Calmed by Nature has a variety of ambient scenes with jazz and rain sounds. They also have a cozy cabin with a roaring fire and a cat seated beside it, which I might like for a night time reading background.
Candy Music Room has lovely cafe views that transport you to places such as the seaside. These ones would be great while cuddled up with a book.
Dreamhop is another lofi channel we like that has a 24/7 radio you can tune in to.
I like to turn on this library ambience while we read aloud The Chronicles of Narnia in the evenings.
Crochet on YT
I am becoming a much improved crochet artist and I have YouTubers to thank for being gifted teachers! Here are some of the fiber artists who I've tuned in to.
The mother-daughter team at Daisy Farm Crafts have thorough tutorials and beautiful projects.
Really great selection of sweaters and shoes that are targeted for the beginner and they are free! (Use an ad blocker on your browser if you don't already!) The videos for the sweater boots were incredibly helpful!
Crochet Dreamz also offers many free patterns and tutorials and I found she had the best beanie ribbing tutorial of anything I had previously tried. She is a wonderful instructor in her videos.
